Funding Our Vantics

 digital Nomads

You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime.

Chinese proverb

We have a slightly updated version of this old chinese proverb: Give a man a computer and he'll sit in his office all day. Give him WiFi or a 4G connection and he'll sit in his van...with his computer, designing and writing software for small businesses to large enterprises

With the advent of a decent wireless connection to the internet we can work from almost anywhere. There are the occasional very remote spots where there isn't even a 3G phone signal but most of the time it's possible to get a good balance between work and play.

There are occasions when you think you've stopped work for the day and a customer has an urgent issue. I've always had the mindset that I'd rather be contactable 24/7/365 and have to spend the occasional 30mins resolving a problem while away for months rather than feel I can only take a week or two off at a time.

It always makes me smile when I have to pop open the laptop while in my wetsuit, sort out whatever needs doing and get out onto the waves.

Now that the UK has left the EU we will have the same restrictions entering the Schengen Area as anyone visiting from other parts of the world, namely only being able to spend 90 out of 180 days in one of the member countries.

Luckily several countries appear to be implementing 'Digital Nomad' visa schemes that allow remote workers stay for extended periods. It may have to be a case of hopping between these countries and spending the minimum amount of time in the Schengen Area until everything settles down.
